Recovery from spinal surgery entails periods of physical inactivity. During these times I have desired to use my hands while reclining to make small objects. This brought to mind a quote by Eva Hesse, stating ‘I would like the work to be non work this means that it would find its way beyond my preconceptions’. There is something primordial in such basic, repetitive and habitual movements that work a material and make something out of it. Hesse’s approach to making was intuitive; quite often she did not know what the final object would resemble—simply that it would come into being. These tubular objects were knitted with clear nylon filament.
